Kaumera for agricultural applications
Increasing abiotic stress, such as drought and soil degradation, combined with stricter regulations on products such as pesticides, is driving the demand for natural solutions that strengthen both soil and crops. These solutions can improve root development, photosynthetic efficiency, and overall crop performance.
Kaumera contributes to healthier soils and increased plant resilience under stress conditions. It can be applied as a stand-alone product through foliar application or soil treatment, or incorporated as a functional ingredient in agricultural formulations.
Field Trials with Kaumera
Over the years, Kaumera has been evaluated in numerous greenhouse and field trials, consistently demonstrating promising results. Kaumera has obtained CE marking as a soil improver under the European Fertilising Products Regulation, allowing it to be marketed throughout Europe. Research towards CE certification as a biostimulant is currently underway at several research institutes and testing facilities across Europe, with highly promising results.
Key findings from greenhouse and field trials
- Improves soil water retention
Trials involving the planting of young trees in urban environments showed that adding Kaumera to tree substrates resulted in higher soil moisture levels, as confirmed by soil sensors, both after rainfall and during periods of drought. As a result, irrigation frequency could be reduced. - Strengthens root development
Trials with turf, wildflower mixtures on dikes, and arable crops demonstrated improved root system development, leading to healthier and more resilient plants. - Can increase crop yields
Field trials with maize showed yield increases of 5–20% using relatively low application rates (only a few kilograms of dry matter per hectare), particularly under drought conditions. In sweet pepper trials, fruit weight increased by at least 10%.

Agritech applications
Kaumera is fully biodegradable and free from microplastics and other harmful substances. Its unique ability to both retain and repel water makes it an excellent raw material for agricultural applications. It can be used as an environmentally friendly ingredient in a wide range of agricultural products that promote plant growth and improve soil health, as well as in agritech products requiring a biodegradable binder.
Thanks to its unique functional properties, Kaumera is an attractive raw material for agritech manufacturers looking to develop more sustainable products.
Kaumera can be used as a functional ingredient in:
- Biostimulants (formulations targeting drought stress and other abiotic stresses)
- Soil improvers
- Seed and fertilizer coatings
- Biodegradable binders for pellets, plant plugs, and plant pots
- Surfactants to improve soil structure and reduce surface crusting
- Erosion control products
