International delegation visits the Kaumera pilot plant in Epe

28 October 2026

An international delegation of scientists, architects and industry experts recently visited the Kaumera pilot plant in Epe. The visit was part of the research initiative ‘From Sludge to Building Materials’. The central question was how Kaumera can contribute to the development of bio-based materials for construction.

We regularly welcome researchers, companies and other interested parties to our Kaumera production facilities. By demonstrating how Kaumera is produced and exchanging knowledge, we explore opportunities for new applications together.

From wastewater to building materials

The international research initiative ‘From Sludge to Building Materials’ explores how resources recovered from wastewater can be transformed into valuable materials for the built environment. The visit to the pilot plant in Epe gave participants the opportunity to see the Kaumera production process up close.

Following a presentation and a guided tour, we discussed the potential of Kaumera in bio-based building materials. Which material properties are relevant? What applications could be explored? And what opportunities and challenges arise when introducing innovative bio-based materials into construction?

Bringing science, architecture and industry together

The delegation brought together a range of disciplines: from researchers at the University of Canberra and CITA (Centre for Information Technology and Architecture) at the Royal Danish Academy to architects from Henning Larsen and experts from Ramboll and Envidan Denmark.

This combination of scientific knowledge, design perspectives and practical experience led to a valuable exchange of insights. Together, we discussed the material’s potential and the steps needed to explore it further.

Exploring opportunities together

We thank our visitors and their organisations for their interest and the open exchange of knowledge and ideas. We look forward to continuing the conversation and exploring how Kaumera can contribute to a circular, bio-based built environment.
