Kaumera approved across Europe as soil improver
The new circular raw material Kaumera® recovered from wastewater has received the European CE mark as a soil improver since Feb. 26. This allows Kaumera® to be used throughout Europe in agriculture and horticulture to make soils healthier.
What is Kaumera?
Kaumera® is a new biobased raw material extracted from sludge pellets formed during wastewater treatment using Nereda® technology. It contains natural substances such as proteins, sugars, potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. It is these substances that help improve the soil.
Research shows that Kaumera has a positive effect on crops such as corn, grass and sunflowers. It also helps with tree planting and grass on levees. It provides better root growth, better water absorption and therefore healthier plants.
According to Patrick van der Velden, Managing Director of Kaumera Sales & Services B.V., this CE mark is an important milestone: “With the CE label, Kaumera is recognized as a soil quality product. We are now looking for farmers and growers at home and abroad who want to test Kaumera in practice. Producers and distributors are also welcome to cooperate.”
From soil improver to biostimulant
In addition to improving soil, Kaumera can also make plants stronger. Research has already shown that Kaumera has the properties of a biostimulant. This means it can help plants cope better with drought and heat. As a result, Kaumera can provide higher yields in agriculture and horticulture in certain conditions.
Field trials are currently being conducted in several European countries by certified research centers and experimental stations. The first results are promising and show that application of Kaumera under drought stress increases crop yields of, for example, corn by 12% to 20% depending on the dosage of Kaumera.
