Kaumera as a potential solution to European restrictions on microplastics in agricultural products
From 2028 onwards, new European regulations will gradually restrict the use of intentionally added microplastics in various agricultural products. For manufacturers of products such as fertilizer coatings and plant plugs, this means that existing formulations may need to be redesigned and revalidated.
At the same time, the demand for more sustainable agricultural practices continues to grow. With every growing season, microplastics accumulate in the soil, where they can persist for many years without contributing to soil health. As a result, the need for fully biodegradable alternatives is increasing rapidly.
A bio-based alternative
Kaumera is a circular biopolymer that can be used as a functional binder in a wide range of agricultural formulations. Thanks to its natural binding properties, biodegradability, and circular origin, Kaumera is a promising candidate for the development of plastic-free agricultural products.
In addition, Kaumera is exempt from REACH registration as a polymer and does not contain any Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs). This makes it well aligned with the growing demand for safe, sustainable, and future-proof raw materials.
More than just a binder
Unlike many alternative binders that serve only an adhesive function, Kaumera has the potential to provide additional functionality.
Greenhouse and field trials have shown that Kaumera, when applied as a soil improver or biostimulant, can have positive effects on soil structure and crop development. This opens up the possibility of developing products such as seed coatings or plant plugs in which the binder itself may also contribute to healthier soils and improved plant growth—a true win-win.
Working together on the next generation of agricultural products
The transition to plastic-free agriculture requires new materials, innovative formulations, and close collaboration to bring new solutions to market.
If you are a manufacturer of plant plugs, seed coatings, biostimulants, fertilizer coatings, or other agrotechnical products and are looking to prepare for the upcoming European regulations, we would be pleased to explore the possibilities together.
