Kaumera used as a bio-based binder in pannels thanks to heat press in fieldlab

11 March 2026

The European panel industry consumes millions of tons of synthetic binders in MDF- and chipboard. What if we could change this into something sustainable?

Thanks to fieldlab The Green Village in Delft  and other partners, we’ve been able to test Kaumera as a 100% natural binder in different panels such as chipboard, MDF, semi-rigid/lightweight and acoustic panels. We created several panels using heat-press production methods with the heat press at fieldlab in the Green Village research facility. For this we used several natural fibres such as hemp, flax and different wood fibres.

Why using Kaumera matters:

And there’s more.

In earlier tests with composites and flooring applications, Kaumera also demonstrated flame-retardant properties — a major advantage, as many synthetic binders are actually flammable.

In the coming weeks, more panels will be produced and tested according to industry standards. If the results confirm what we’ve seen so far, this could be an important step toward safer and more circular panel materials.
